APPLYING AS non-practicing
- You must be a licensed Optician or Contact Len Fitter and be practicing for one full year before you are eligible to apply as non-practicing.
- A Non-Practicing license is renewable for 3 consecutive years. After 3 years a fully reinstated license is required to return to work.
To register at NSCDO as a non-practicing Optician you are required to submit the following to the registrar:.
- The completed Non-Practicing application and include declaration you will not be dispensing for the year you are registering as non-practicing.
- Continuing Education credits are required for non-practicing. Eight (8) continuing education credits for Dispending Optician or ten (10) credits for a Contact Lens Fitter.

The above requirements can be submitted via email or using Canada Post along with a completed Non-Practicing Application and a cheque or money made payable to NSCDO for the appropriate fee. You can also make payment by credit card by providing your information and authorizing NSCDO to charge your credit card with a credit card authorization form. With this authorization a payment request can be emailed to you with a secure link to complete credit card payment.

When all requirements are received, the applicate can expect a response or issue of a license within 3 to 5 business days.
Annual renewal of the issued license is required in March of each year at which time Continuing Education Credits are required, 8 for Dispensing Opticians and 10 for Contact Lens Fitters.
